Cemetery in Klewanie

The Catholic cemetery in Klewanie is a few hundred metres from the parish church to the south-east and, according to Zbigniew Hauser in his publication, lies on the right side of the road to Rowne on a hill, surrounded by houses. The author found 17 gravestones of which 3 are unnamed. The dates of death of those buried range between 1922 and 1940. Five of the monuments are in the form of knotted tree trunks - also in the shape of a cross. There are also gravestones. Some memorials are overturned, cracked or dismembered. A monument with a more elaborate form is the children's gravestone of Reni Borkowska, who died in 1934, decorated with a sculpture of an angel on rocks next to a cross whose arms resemble a knotty tree.

Hauser mentions that, according to local tradition, the older cemetery in Klewanie was destroyed quote, "during Soviet times". It is highly likely that this is the cemetery that was described in the Volyn Monitor in September 2014 by Oksana Bajcar-Artemenko and Jarosław Kowalczuk. Ukrainian researchers came across its trail in autumn 2013. It is a cemetery with Polish tombstones located near Klevan in the forest, on the grounds of a forester's lodge. The cemetery area has a regular rectangular shape with a preserved trace of an alley and is bounded by a ditch and embankment. There are probably hundreds of people buried here and not only Poles. The tombstones are overturned or covered with soil. The burial chambers are in the shape of crypts. The gravestone monuments were created in the 19th century and represent, according to the authors of the description, a high artistic level. A special object is the remnant of a magnificent building - a chapel or a family tomb http://https://monitorwolynski.com/pl/news/607-ko-cio-i-cmentarz-w-klewaniu ; https://kresy24.pl/odnaleziono-jeszcze-jeden-dawny-polski-cmentarz .
