Biography:

Jan Raszka (1871-1945), born in Ropica, son of Jan Raszka and Maria, née Kisza, sculptor, engraver, medallist, painter, professor and academic teacher. He studied painting and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Julius Victor Berger, Siegmund L'Allemand, August Eisenmenger, Edmund von Hellmer and Caspar von Zumbusch. In 1902 he moved to Krakow, where he became a lecturer in drawing and sculpture at the Faculty of Artistic Industry at the Higher School of Industry in Krakow. At the same time, he was involved in restoration work on the Wawel Castle. In 1914, he enlisted as a volunteer in the Silesian Legion. He took part in the First World War. In 1917, he started to serve as a clerk for the care of legionaries' graves. At that time he designed many legion medals and patriotic badges. After the war, he returned to work as a teacher. He was one of the co-founders of the Society of Painters and Sculptors of Art "Family". Until 1923, he served as honorary president of the Association of Polish Artists in Krakow. He was the author of numerous monuments. He was also fascinated by technique, which he dealt with as an amateur. He died in 1945.
