Biography:

Jerzy Popieluszko (1947-1984), born as Alfons Popieluszko in Okopy, son of Władysław and Marianna née Gniedziejko. He was an altar boy, received communion and confirmation in 1956. He completed his secondary school education in Suchowola. In 1965 he began to study at the Higher Metropolitan Seminary in Warsaw. In 1971, he changed his name to Jerzy Aleksander. A year later, he was ordained a priest. From 1980, he was associated with the Solidarity movement. He was under surveillance by the Security Service. He was harassed by the authorities. In 1984 he was abducted, beaten and murdered.
