Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Poland in Sichów

History
The village of Sichov is located not far from the historical centre of Lviv. The first Roman Catholic shrine was built in 1910, and the funds for the construction were covered by the villagers. A later inventory records: "(...) they were forced to build by the distance from the parish church in Zubrza, as well as by the Ruthenian priest driving the Poles away from the church with a stick". As can be seen in the text, Sichów formerly belonged to the parish in Zubrza, but in 1913 a parish exposition was established on the site, including Pasieki Zubrzyckie. Erected in the village, the temple was a small chapel, which is now the presbytery of the present church. The extension was carried out in 1936, at which time Father Telesfor Gabryl was the parish priest. It was he who formed the committee that collected the necessary funds for the construction among the parishioners and the surrounding population, also receiving a subsidy of 4000 zloty. The project to extend the church was made by the architect Andrzej Frydecki.

In the spring of 1946, the church in Sichow was closed and the parishioners left for Poland, taking with them all the belongings in the church and the chapel in Pasieki Zubrzyckie. The last parish administrator, Father Justyn Kostek, settled with some of the parishioners in Jerzmanow near Wroclaw. Until 1990, the church was used as an Orthodox church; it now functions as the Roman Catholic Church of St Michael the Archangel and is in good condition.

Architecture
The church was built in the centre of the village, on the road from Lviv to Bóbrka. It is oriented and built of brick with a concrete structure and mostly plastered. The building consists of a spacious, three-bay nave with an additional, slightly narrower half-bay on the west side, and a much narrower and lower, two-bay chancel, which is closed with a three-sided projection. Adjacent to the chancel is a vestry designed on a rectangular plan, and at the south-west corner of the nave is a small rectangular annex. The windows of the church are varied: in the nave niches and apse of the presbytery there are rectangular windows, closed with a pointed arch, in the western half-aisle there are narrow rectangular windows and in the western wall there is a small triangular window. In the vestry again a rectangular window. The entrance opening at the front closed with a pointed arch. The music choir was made of concrete and supported by pillars, between which three ogival arcades were spanned.

The apex of the nave was topped with a turret for a signal box in the form of an openwork gate with an iron cross. Gabled roofs were built over the main parts of the church, with a multi-pitched roof over the apse and a pent roof over the vestry - all roofs were covered with sheet metal.

The former furnishings of the church included: The 18th century Baroque main altar from the Dominican church in Lviv, made of wood, architectural with the image of the Queen of the Polish Crown hanging in the clearance of the central field (made by Father Mieczyslaw Bryczkowski) and with sculptures depicting St Joseph and St Stephen, which were located on the sides of the altar. The church also formerly contained an organ, a wooden pulpit, a gilded metal reliquary of the Holy Cross tree, and seven feretrons (pictures carried on rods during processions).

Two bells remain from the old furnishings in the church, one with the inscription "R. MATHEISEL ODLEWNIA DZWONÓW WE LWOWIE | FUNDOWALI PARAFIANIE SICHOWA | 1923 | KRÓLOWO KORONY POLSKIEJ | MÓDLY SIĘ ZA NAMI" and the other, which is called "St Anthony", decorated with a representation of the saint and floral decoration, with the inscription: "| ST. ANTONI PRAY FOR US | FOUNDER TEKL[A] CHRUŚCIEL | SICHÓW 1927 | DURING THE PASTORATE OF FR. DIONYSIUS LUBOWIECKI". The third bell is absent, as is the signature.
At present, the interior of the church has been covered with new paintings and the furnishings have been supplemented to match the needs of Eastern worship. Some of the old furnishings were transported to Wrocław, specifically to the Jerzmanowo estate and to Wrocław-Zarnik. In turn, the register books were taken to the Registry Office (USC) in Warsaw.

Through the prism of the form of the church in Sichów, it can be seen that the history of its creation was divided into two phases. Its original chapel, which now serves as the presbytery, was a modest neo-Gothic church, typical of turn-of-the-century Galician architecture. The much larger nave, on the other hand, has simple forms typical of 1930s functionalism, while at the same time alluding to the character of the older part of the building, such as the repeated pointed arch. The task of harmonising both parts of the church was set by the investors to Andrzej Frydecki, who was up to the task. He was an outstanding representative of functionalist architecture and a professor of the Lviv Polytechnic, and after World War II of the Wrocław Polytechnic. His projects included the pavilion of the psychiatric hospital in Kobierzyn and the PZUS building in Lviv. His most outstanding work, however, would have to be the design of the Polish Soldier's House in Lvov, developed together with Stefan Porębowicz.
