Stained-glass windows by Jan J. Janczak in the Church of St Pankracy

Variants of the name:
„Farbfenster mit der Geschichte der Schöpfung und Erlösung”

In the magnificent neo-Gothic basilica of the Catholic parish of St. Pankraz (church built between 1886 and 1890), major renovation work was undertaken between 1991 and 1993. On this occasion, six windows of both wings of the transept received new stained glass windows designed by Jan Janczak, who was associated with the village of Boswil for many years. They were made by the local firm Albert Rajsek, with whom Janczak had collaborated several times, including on his earlier Swiss commissions for Aarau and Wil. The Cracovian artist, known in Poland mainly as a painter and author of animated films, settled in Switzerland since 1981, has a considerable output in the field of stained glass there - he is regarded as one of the most important representatives of this field at the end of the 20th century. Some windows bear the signature of Janczak and the Rajsek atelier, as well as the date 92.

The stained glass windows in Boswil refer to the Old and New Testaments, but as usual with Janczak in a very free way, with discreet contemporary references (e.g. contemporary clothes of some characters, a car appear in the scenes). In the left transept, three windows depict: the construction of the Tower of Babel and the handing over of the Law on Mount Sinai; the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan and the dove of the Holy Spirit; the Last Supper, the Mourning and the Resurrection. The three windows of the right section, meanwhile, show: Paradise with Adam and Eve, next to which the Slaughter of the Innocents in Bethlehem; the Nativity and the Adoration of the Three Kings; Noah's Ark, Mount Ararat and the Flight into Egypt. The iconography of the stained glass windows and the theological exegesis of the entire programme are presented in detail by the parish priest, Fr Andreas Schildknecht, in a reproduced booklet distributed in the church. The fairy-tale-grotesque stylisation and the narrative, devoid of concrete, logical continuity, spun through larger and smaller scenes are close to the Polish school of book illustration of the 1950s and 1960s (Janczak himself also did the illustrations). Janczak had previously developed a similar concept of religious art, colourful and narrated with detachment, enriched by visual anecdote, e.g. in paintings and stained glass in the church in Glattbrugg near Zurich and in Lustenau in Austria (e.g. a very similar representation of Paradise there). In artistic terms, however, the ensemble from Boswil seems to be the author's most mature achievement.
