Biography:

Władysław Skoczylas (1883-1934), Polish painter, sculptor, printmaker and educator. Founder of the Polish school of wood engraving. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. He was taught painting by Leon Wyczółkowski and Teodor Azentowicz, and sculpture by Konstanty Laszczka. Between 1910 and 1913, he received his education in Paris. In 1922, he became head of the Department of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and its director in 1929-1930. For his series of watercolours, he received a bronze medal at the Olympic competition of art and literature in Amsterdam in 1928. He was a co-founder of the Association of Polish Artists 'Rhythm' (1922), the Association of Graphic Artists 'Rhythm' (1925) and the Institute of Art Propaganda. A characteristic feature of his work is Skoczylas's 'comb', that is, the rhythmic interweaving of white and black in the composition.
