Sculptures by Małgorzata Chodakowska in Germany

Małgorzata Chodakowska (born 1965 in Łódź), sculptor. In 1985, she began her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, which she continued from 1988 at the Academy of Fine Arts (Akademie der Bildenden Künste) in Vienna. Since 1991, she has lived permanently in Dresden (in the Oberpoyritz district), where – in addition to working in her own studio – she runs a vineyard with her husband, Klaus Zimmerling. She works mainly in bronze and wood. In recent years, she has taken a particular interest in a series of sculptural fountains, amongst which one can discern inspirations drawn from Edgar Degas’s famous sculpture ‘The Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer’. As well as in Germany (including Berlin, Chemnitz, Dresden, Freiberg, Leipzig, Pirna and Stuttgart), she has held a number of solo exhibitions in Austria, Denmark, Japan and Poland. She is the recipient of various awards and honours for her sculptural works.

Małgorzata Chodakowska’s work continues to be one of the most significant Polish influences on contemporary culture in Saxony. Her full-figure sculptures have become a permanent feature of the state’s public spaces. They can be found in unusual locations, not necessarily associated with the exhibition or promotion of contemporary art. One example is the fountain sculpture ‘Girl with a Leaf’, situated right next to the vast Groβer Garten park and leisure complex in Dresden.
