Biography:

Gabriela Zapolska, born Maria Gabriela Janowska (1857-1921), born in Podhajce, daughter of Wincenty Korwin-Piotrowski and Józefa, née Karska, writer, playwright, actress and publicist, one of the most important representatives of Polish naturalism.

She began her career as an actress, performing in Krakow, Lviv and Paris, among other places. From 1883, she published novellas, novels and dramas - often controversial and boldly commenting on modern times. She was also a theatre and art critic, an advocate of impressionism and symbolism.

The author of the famous Moralność pani Dulskiej (The Morality of Mrs Dulska), in her works she exposed the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie and addressed social issues such as prostitution, disease and female emancipation.

She is buried in the Łyczakowski Cemetery in Lviv.
