Museum in Rivne, Volhynia

The text mentions the construction of a museum in the district town of Rivne in Volhynia. The museum, established at the Agricultural Society, holds a collection of 92 varieties of wheat and 23 varieties of oats cultivated by Count Jan Dunin Karwicki. In addition, bones of mammoths and "other antediluvian animals" are on display. In addition, there are medals, coins from the times of Władysław Jagiełło, Sigismund I or Jan III Sobieski (Source: "Ziemia. Tygodnik Krajoznawczy Ilustrowany', Warsaw 1910, no. 34, p. 9, after: Wielkopolska Biblioteka Cyfrowa).

A modernised reading of the text

Museum in Wołyń

In the district town of Rivne in Volhynia, a museum was established by the Agricultural Society, which was founded from voluntary donations of local citizens and landowners, and the main initiator and most zealous collector of the museum is the director of the Society, Mr Edward Okęcki. Although the museum has only been in existence for two years, the collections are interesting and abundant. At the forefront is a magnificent collection of 92 varieties of wheat and 23 varieties of oats, grown in Volhynia by Count Jan Dunin Karwicki.

Rare excavations of mammoth horns, folded neatly, are housed next to bones of other antediluvian animals and several um at the same time found - a gift of Mr Edmund Lipka. On the other side, a collection of coins and medals dating back to very ancient times, such as a Jewish silver coin with an image of a branched tree, coins from the times of Władysław Jagiełło, Jan Olbracht, Sigismund I, Sigismund Augustus, Sobieski, Jan Kazimierz, etc.; one of the oldest is a coin of Queen Ryksa, mother of Casimir I, from the 11th century - a gift of Mr Samuel Koprowski.

Very rare and interesting, although not that old, are the coins of the type of private estates: 1) coins with the coat of arms "Colonna", with the inscription Dzierbice, 2) with the inscription "folwark Równo" and a monogram, 3) with the coat of arms Kołłątaj and L d., a total of about 500 coins. Of the medals, the interesting ones include: 1) a silver-plated bronze medal minted for Aleks. I for the restoration of the Kingdom of Poland at the Congress of Vienna in 1815, 2) a medal in honour of Nicolaus Copernicus on the four-hundredth anniversary of his birth in 1573 with the inscription: "He stopped the sun, moved the earth - the Polish tribe gave him out", a gift of Countess Janina Walewska.

In the museum there are samples of Volhynian marbles, an interesting piece of granite from Gniew with a carved drawing of a stylised nautilus flower. There are also Chinese and Tatar tuques, Italian marbles, fossilised shells, and crystals - a gift of Count Colonna Piotr Czosnowski. From the Stone Age, the museum also has some nice excavations, such as a stone ball, hammers and an axe, found by landowner Vasyl Sepchok from Zhytyn in the Rivne district and personally donated by him. Having visited the Rivne museum's interesting collections, I would like to point out that perhaps it would be better if the Agrarian Society created a Rivne museum, collecting only things connected with the past of Volhynia or illustrating its present, which would be a valuable asset for our country.

In order to help the zealous collector to realise this idea, I would like to ask the kind readers to send the Rivne museum even the smallest collections, as well as photographs of castles, palaces, manors, churches, old lampposts, granaries, if possible with a detailed description of the history of the buildings.
