Description of the Dominican Monastery of Aukszta-Letuwa

The text describes the church and former Dominican Fathers' monastery founded by Wawrzyniec Michał Odlaniski-Poczobutt, built in 1779. The further part of the note describes the temple building (Source: Tygodnik Illustrowany, Warsaw 1873, Series 2, T:11, p. 296, after: Digital Library of the University of Łódź).

A modernised reading of the text.

Palewenis, former monastery of the Dominican Fr.

In Aukszta-Łetuwa, in the district of Wiłkmergie, and usually called Wiłkomierz, on the high bank of the river Łewenis, there is a church and a former monastery of the Rev. Fr. Dominican monastery, founded by the land magistrate of the same district, Lawrence Michal Odlaniński-Poczobutt (Pacziosbutas) and his wife Maryanna, née Doumantas-Siesicka, on 28 May 1676, during the reign of John III, with their endowment of permanent funds: Plovenian lands (with a manor, with access to the Pelis forest and Lake Višnta, with the bank of the river Levenis and the bridge toll), the Lomaki manor and a capital of 9675 zlotys. Zealous for the future of his foundation, Odlaniski-Poczobutt, in his donation bequest, in the tribunal granted, expressed himself as follows: "And whoever would like to ruin this my will and foundation badly from my successors, invalidate it, vel in dubium vocare, sit anathema in the church of God and let him have part with Judas, and every such to the terrible court of God." The church was made of bricks, founded on the day of the foundation, while the monastery was built in 1779, on the site of the old, probably wooden one. The church tower was a shapely three-storey tower, 45 cubits high, but after it was destroyed in its upper part by a lightning strike in 1851, with architectural insult to the whole, it was replaced by such a turret as the drawing shows. The church has been a parish church since 1849. The monastery was dissolved in 1864, since then Palyesvenija had a library of several thousand volumes, of which bibliographically valuable copies were transferred to the public library in Vilnius. The general view of the church and the monastery, as depicted in the attached drawing, is taken from the opposite bank of the river Levenis, from the estate of the Niorunas citizen Veclavovich (Vinclavytis). The location - overlooking the charming valley of the Levenis River and the opposite uplands with their pretty manors - is very beautiful.
