Excerpts from local chronicles in the magazine 'Wieści z Polski'. This issue describes the initiative of the Union of Polish Women in the USA to erect a monument to Maria Konopnicka in Chicago. Also mentioned is the question of obtaining her own flat and land in France (Source: "Wieści z Polski", Warsaw 1929, R: 2, no. 6, p. 25, after: Jagiellonian Digital Library).

A modernised reading of the text

The Union of Polish Women intends to build a monument to Maria Konopnicka.

"The Voice of the Polish Women in Chicago reports that the Polish Women's Union will erect a monument to the poet Maria Konopnicka. This monument is to be erected from small contributions, in order to give an opportunity to every Polish woman to make her contribution, from a penny to as much as she can afford.

A list of contributions, initiated by several people at an initial meeting of the Education Department, has therefore been opened. The Polish Women's Union expects to raise about five thousand dollars within three months and intends to proceed with the construction of the monument at that time.

A letter was written to Mrs. President Mościcka and to the ladies in Lviv about the decisions of the Polish Women's Association in America regarding this monument. A project was drawn up to have a list of the donors embedded in a suitable casket in the opening of the stone as an eternal memento.
