Stanisław Kazimierz Ostrowski (1879-1947) was a Polish sculptor. He studied between 1895 and 1900 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Alfred Daun and Konstanty Laszczka. In 1899, he co-founded the literary and artistic magazine Chimera in Warsaw. In 1901, he married the eminent poet Bronisława Edmunda Brzezińska. He then lived in Lvov (1902-1905) and continued his studies in Florence and Rome. Between 1906 and 1913, he stayed in Paris, where he founded the Society of Polish Artists in 1910. He lived in Warsaw from 1913 to 1937, but with a 3-year break to stay in Kharkov (1915-1918). In addition to creating, he was also involved in social activities in Polish exile communities. Between 1938 and 1939, he stayed in Italy, and from 1941 he lived in New York. In the interwar period he played a significant role in the cultural life of the capital, actively supporting various initiatives. In 1928 he was co-responsible for the polychromy of the tenements in the Old Town. In addition, in 1925 he realised the project of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the arcades of the Saxon Palace. Other noteworthy works include the design of a circulating coin with the likeness of Józef Piłsudski in circulation in the 1930s, and the statue of Władysław Jagiełło in front of the Polish Pavilion at the 1939 World Exhibition in New York, which still stands in Central Park. During the Second World War Ostrowski emigrated to New York. where he died in obscurity.
