A portrait medallion of the composer was placed on a magnificent composition made of boulders along the main path of the upper park in the southern part of the spa. The initiative came from a group of Polish émigrés and their original idea was to commemorate the house, the composer's place of residence. However, the municipal authorities refused to install a plaque on the façade of the building.

Popiel was the designer of several monuments, his most famous works remaining the monuments to Adam Mickiewicz in Lviv from 1904 and Tadeusz Kościuszko in Washington from 1907-1911; he also specialised in religious sculpture and portraits (including medallions). The work from Karlovy Vary is completely forgotten, also among the commemorations of Chopin rarely recalled. It is one of the most artistically interesting (especially as a quasi-natural, romantic composition in a landscape) monuments in the spa park, where many well-known cultural figures, visitors to the spa, are commemorated.

Chopin visited Carlsbad, then already one of Europe's most famous spas, in 1835 to meet his parents. There he met several Polish emigrants, including Kazimierz Brodziński.
