Tombstone of Ginette Neveu in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris

A stone stele with a round medallion in bas-relief depicting a stylised profile of the deceased is a little-known work from the great sculptor's youthful French period, made just before her return to Poland. The outstanding French violinist Ginette Neveu (1919-1949), whose brilliant youthful career brought her, among others, the Grand Prix of the H. Wieniawski Competition, died in a plane crash together with her brother, the pianist Jean Neveu (1918-1949). The Air France airline was therefore the commissioner of the tombstone. Szapocznikow worked in Paris from 1949 at the stonemasonry workshop of J. Lerendu, located near the Père-Lachaise cemetery. There she made, among other things, portraits and copies of antique sculptures. Lerendu supported her during a difficult period of study and severe illness. The original version of the violinist's portrait was uncovered there. In her early work, Szapocznikow excelled in portrait works; her 1950 bust portrait of her mother shows similar features to Neveu's medallion.

In 1969, as the violinist's mother was laid to rest in the family grave, the entire tombstone was renovated and the much-damaged stone medallion was replaced with a bronze one. The signed plaster version is in the archive of the artist's son, Piotr Stanislawski.
