Biography:

Aleksander Tys (1803-1846), born in Jeziorna near Warsaw, son of Jan Tys (1768-1830), owner of a paper mill in Jeziorna and a freemason, and Sabina Stamm, members of the Evangelical-Reformed church.

The Tys family had been involved in stamp paper production for generations. Alexander was one of five children of Jan and Sabina. He studied law and achieved a prominent position in the Kingdom of Poland. He held the positions of Prosecutor General of the Ninth Department of the Warsaw Ruling Senate, Senior Member of the Government Commission of Justice and President of the Church College of the Evangelical-Reformed Church in Warsaw. He was a knight of the Order of Saint Stanislaus 1st Class, Saint Vladimir 3rd Class, Saint Anne 2nd Class with an imperial crown, and the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle 4th Class (Lipkowski p. 203, 263; KW No. 104 of 21 April 1846).

After the fall of the November Uprising, he found himself in St Petersburg, where he was active as a scholar. In 1838 he published an article in the French legal journal Revue étrangère et française de législation entitled "Notice sur la coordination des lois provinciales de l'Empire de Russie", in which he addressed the problem of codification of provincial laws in the lands taken by Russia during the partitions (Witkowski, p. 286).

He died on 7 April 1846 in Paris at 12 rue Geoffroy Marie, aged 43. His death certificate described him as 'procurator-general, cavalier of Poland'. He was buried in Père-Lachaise cemetery in section Q (AdP, AD Actes reconstitués de l'état civil de Paris; Recueil 1855, p. 286). Members of his family were buried in the Evangelical-Reformed cemetery in Warsaw, but their burial places are now unknown.
