Anna Batory - painter and sculptor

Deported to Soviet Russia during the Second World War, she got out of the gulag thanks to an amnesty and arrived in the Middle East with the Anders Army. She began her studies in painting in England and continued them after arriving, in 1952, in Canada. She attended Sir George Williams University, department of drawing and painting, and Loyola College (now Concordia University), department of sculpture. In the 1960s and 1970s, the artist regularly participated in the artistic life of the Polish diaspora in Montreal and Toronto. Her works were included in a group exhibition of Polish artists held at EXPO67 in Montreal. In 1974, Batory had two exhibitions in Montreal: an individual exhibition at St. Columba Church and a group exhibition at Place Ville Marie. She participated in the exhibition, 16 Polish-Canadian Artists, at the Toronto Public Library, in 1977. In the catalogue accompanying the exhibition, the painter formulated her artistic credo, confessing that colour is for her the most important element of expression, she observes the world through colours and prefers to express her emotions in painting rather than in conversation. No documentation has survived to characterise Anna Batory's painting. It is known from reviews that the themes of the works were flowers, landscape and portrait. The artist did oil, acrylic and watercolour paintings. In 1978, she showed her works at the Polonia of Tomorrow-Polonia of Tomorrow exhibition, at City Hall in Toronto and at a group exhibition in Montreal at Place des Jardin. Years later, Anna Batory reminded the public by taking part in a group exhibition organised at City Hall in Toronto, in 1992. Her works can be found in private collections in North America and Europe.
