Anna Machudera - painter and artist of spatial forms

She studied biology and primary education at the University of Lodz, as well as zootechnics at the Agricultural Academy in Poznan. In 1988, she left for Greece, from where she emigrated to Canada in 1990. Already in Poland she was attracted to art, but she began her art education in Canada, at Sir John Macdonald Secondary School in Hamilton. At the school she met the artist Marguerite Larmand, who discovered her talent and invited her to exhibit together: "Part of the Fabric no.1" in 1995 and "Part of The Fabric no.2" in 1996.Ania Machudera continued her studies at Sheridan College, where art professor, Austrian painter and photographer Gernot Dick played a significant role. Between 1995 and 1997, Machudera became involved with the Atlin Art Centre, an experimental private art school founded by Gernot Dick. In 2000, Machudera enrolled at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD), studying painting and drawing under artists such as John Scott, Natalka Husar, Cathy Daley and John Kissick. Year after year, the artist won a scholarship for the best student and received awards for her semester's work in subsequent semesters of study. In 2001, she was awarded the Sully Corth Memorial Fund Scholarship. The artist also completed the Graphic Design Program at George Brown College.

Machudera has exhibited her paintings and plexiglass objects many times at well-known Toronto galleries: Bau-Xi Gallery, John B. Aird Gallery, Fran Hill Gallery, Project Gallery. The artist has worked more closely with Oeno Gallery and Art Interiors - Art Gallery. Ani Machudera was recognised for her experimental works with circles on plexiglass, which she called 'Illuminations' - installations consisting of three elements: light, transparent circles on plexiglass and their shadows. The play of light and shadow in these works has a meditative and decorative power. The intangible elements of light and shadow provoke philosophical and inspirational reflection. The artist works like a scientist observing her thought process and recording her reflections on the canvas of the wall. The artist identifies with the art of postmodernism, the tenets of which she has assimilated into her work. She is interested in the process of 'linear thinking' and is more interested in posing questions in creation than providing answers.

In the works created between 2006 and 2010, the theme of woman and the many threads associated with this emerged. Painting series were created: 'Lost in Translation', 'It's not a doll. It's a baby'. The artist on the occasion of the series 'It's not a doll. It's a baby. It's not a doll' in the exhibition catalogue states: "I see myself as an observer, someone else, I am someone who looks into women's mental states". The artist offered an emotional journey documenting the challenge to mother a doll instead of a real baby. Machudera recreated scenes played by mothers of plastic dolls, documenting the phenomenon and questioning the reason and consequences of such behaviour. The artist's work is valued by collectors and has been awarded: John Alfsen Award in 2002, Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant Merit Award in 2005, John B. Aird Gallery Merit Award in 2006.

Since 2015, the artist has been working on a series of 'Cubes' in which she uses shadow and phosphorescent paint to create a sense of movement, depth and illusion in the perception of the works. In her work, the artist seeks to understand and develop contemporary tensions between the physical world and spiritual forces. She is also inspired by scientific research, the discoveries of quantum physics. She is fascinated by the inexpressible and even incomprehensible processes behind this. The artist's work is held in private collections in Canada, the United States, Germany and in public collections at the Canadian Ballet Youth Ensemble, Lebovic Enterprises LTD, Canadian Medic Alert Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society.

Work in catalogue
Anna Machudera, 'Illumination no 31', 2014, 185 x 185 cm. The work consists of two elements - a circle on plexiglass and a second panel on which the shadow of the first falls. The size is impressive - a square two metres by two metres. Depending on the modelling of the circle, its pattern and thickness, the shape of the falling shadow changes. The strength of the installation is the play of light and shadow, from which flows the decorative and meditative power of Ania Machudera's work.
