Construction of the first Polish School and Craftsmen's Dormitory in Lviv

A short press release mentioning the beginning of construction work on the first Craftsman School and Bursa for Polish children in Lviv. The building is to be located next to the Church of Our Lady of the Dawn Gate in Upper Lychakiv (Source: "Wschód", Lwow 1939, no. 133, p. 2, after: Jagiellonian Digital Library).

A modernised reading of the text

The construction of a living monument to the defence of Lviv has already begun.

Earthworks have already begun in Lviv for the construction of the first Polish school for craftsmen and a dormitory for poor abandoned Polish children next to the Church of Our Lady of the Ostra Brama in the Upper Lychakiv district; these facilities will be a living monument to commemorate the defence of Lviv in 1918. The start of the works was solemnly celebrated in the Church of the Ostra Brama with a holy mass celebrated by Rev. Canon Dubiel, parish priest of St Anthony's Church. The ceremony was attended by the district governor, Dr Klinowiecki, the city commander, Colonel Chodko Zajko, the city vice-president, Mr Irzyk, the director engineer, Mr Serafin, a delegation from the Officers' Corps and a delegation from the Jazlowiecki Ulanów regiment, as well as representatives of all the associations and organisations.

Schoolchildren were also in attendance in large numbers, as were members of the Committee for the Construction of a Living Monument, engineers with their workers. Rev. Dr. Antoni Guzik spoke on behalf of the Salesian priests who will be looking after the plants, followed by a speech on behalf of the committee by the vice-president of the Association of Defenders of Lwow, Major Jozef Client, who also announced that the construction of the plants had begun. In turn, Rev. Canon Dubiel consecrated the construction site. The Building Committee expects the construction of the edifice to have pulled up under the roof within the current year, and to be completed next year, so that the building can be opened to the public on the anniversary of the 600th anniversary of Lviv's permanent incorporation into Poland.

The Building Committee currently has 130,000 zloty collected, with a shortfall of 120,000 zloty for this year, which our society will undoubtedly still contribute.
