Biography:

Edmund Małachowicz (1925-2015) - Polish architect and conservationist, received the SARP Honorary Award in 2001. After Małachowicz graduated from the Adam Mickiewicz Gymnasium in Vilnius, his education was interrupted by the outbreak of war in 1939. He took part in the fighting against the Germans as a member of the Home Army in Vilnius. After the occupation of the city by the Soviet Army, he was imprisoned in the Soviet camp in Miedniki Królewskie. He was then forcibly transported to Kaluga, where he worked in logging as a soldier in a Soviet military work regiment. In 1946, he returned to Poland, settling in Kluczbork and later Wrocław. In Wrocław, from 1947, he attended a technical building school and passed his matriculation exam in 1948. He began his architectural studies at the Wrocław Polytechnic, graduating as an engineer in 1951. Unfortunately, due to political reasons, he was unable to continue his studies with a master's degree, so he had to complete them in extramural mode at the same university in 1958. Edmund Małachowicz was a full professor and president of the Wrocław branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences. As an expert on medieval Polish architecture, he conducted reconstruction work and made many theoretical reconstructions of monuments. He wrote several books on the monuments of Wrocław and Vilnius and dealt with the theory of monument conservation. In the years 1965-1972 he was the municipal conservator of monuments in Wrocław. He was also a member of the organising committee of the Wrocław '70 Art Symposium. He was friends with Marian Poźniak, a painter with whom he returned from Siberia together.
