Biography:

Franciszek Black (1881-1959), born in Warsaw, son of Teodor and Maria, sculptor and medallist. In 1901 he began his studies at the London School of Decorative Wood Carving, and from 1903 continued his education at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts. He collaborated with Antoni Wiwulski on the design of the Grunwald Monument in Kraków. In Kraków, he met Ignacy Paderewski, who awarded him a scholarship enabling him to travel around Europe. During this time, Black honed his sculpting skills in various studios and became acquainted with the largest art collections on the continent. He was a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, a significant distinction for an artist from abroad. At the beginning of the second decade of the 20th century, he settled in Lausanne, where he lived until 1920, creating many works. He later moved to Paris, where he carried out numerous private commissions, including tomb sculptures. His works can be found, among others, in the National Museum in Poznan. His sculptures can be found in French cemeteries, such as the figure of Christ on Aleksander Kwiatkowski's tombstone (1955, based on an earlier design from 1935), the monument to Leopold Sudre in the Montparnasse cemetery in Paris (1933) and the monument to Józef Hoene-Wroński in the Neuilly-sur-Seine cemetery near Paris (1937). Francis Black is buried in the Montmorency cemetery.
