Biography:

Franciszek Black (1881-1959), born in Warsaw. In 1901 he began his education at the School of Decorative Wood Carving in London. He then studied in Paris at the Academy of Fine Arts (from 1903). He collaborated with Antoni Wiwulski, with whom he designed the Grunwald Monument in Kraków. In the Podawel Castle he met Ignacy Paderewski, who granted him a scholarship. Thanks to him, František Black made a series of journeys around Europe, learning the art of sculpture in various studios and becoming acquainted with the best art collections on the continent. He was a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, which for a prodigy was a great honour. At the beginning of the second decade of the 19th century, he settled in Lausanne, where he lived until 1920. At that time he created many works. He then lived in Paris where he carried out numerous private commissions. He also created many tomb sculptures. A collection of his sculptures can be found in the National Museum in Poznan.
