Graves of Polish refugees

Following the German aggression against Poland on 1 September 1939 and the attack by the USSR on 17 September 1939, thousands of Poles, both civilians and soldiers, crossed the Hungarian border. Despite the difficult international situation and Hungary's affiliation with the Axis powers, the Hungarians were very sympathetic and provided assistance to the Polish refugees. The Poles were cared for - both by the Hungarian state and by Polish organisations operating in Hungary. The internees were placed in numerous military and civilian camps.
The number of Polish internees in the initial period of the exile is estimated at about 140,000, including about 33,000 privates and officers. Over time, the number of refugees, mainly military, decreased as a result of the evacuation campaign organised by the Poles to France and the Middle East to Polish military units being formed there.
Two Polish war refugees are buried in the Dejtar cemetery. Next to the entrance, by the cemetery chapel, in the first row, in a common grave with a Soviet soldier, rests Sergeant Franciszek Mieguć, a border guard who died on 13.12.1939 in the local internment camp. A slab was placed on the grave with an inscription only in Hungarian, indicating the post-war arrangement of the grave by the Hungarian authorities. It was made of light-coloured artificial stone with a vertical inscription plate with the inscription: "HÖSEINK / ISMERETLEN SZOVIET KATONA / ROSENBERG / JÁNOS / VÁMŐR TIZEDES / + 1927 VIII 24 / ÉLT 22 ÉVET / MIEGUCS FERENC / +1939 XII 13 / ÉLT 22 ÉVET/" (TO THE HEROES/ SOVIET SOLDIER / / ROSENBERG JANOS / CUSTOMS GUARD / + 1927 VIII 24 / ÉLT 22 ÉVET / MIEGUCS FRANCISEK / POLISH SOLDIER / +1939 XII 13 / ÉLT 22 ÉVET) /
In addition, there is a second Polish grave in row 19, second in order from the alley. Unfortunately, only the name "Stanislaw" can be read from the obliterated inscription on the cross.

Elaborated. A.Wojda, MKiDN, VII 2025.
