Józef Ignacy Kałuża (1896-1944), born in Przemyśl, son of Andrzej and Magdalena (née Peter), footballer, coach, sports activist and teacher.

Linked with Cracovia for almost his entire career, playing 454 matches and scoring 476 goals. In 1921, he won the Polish championship and the title of match-winning goal-scorer. Between 1924 and 1929, he was team captain.

He made sixteen appearances for the Polish national team, scoring seven goals. His goal in a match against the Kingdom of SHS (1923) was the first goal scored by a Polish team in a home game. He also took part in the Olympic Games in Paris (1924).

In 1932, he took over as selector of the Polish national team, holding the post until 1939. - the longest tenure in the history of the Polish national team. Under his leadership, the national team achieved historic successes: it took fourth place at the Berlin Olympics (1936), was promoted to the World Championships for the first time (1938), and won a prestigious victory over Hungary (4:2 in 1939).

After the outbreak of World War II, he remained in occupied Krakow, rejecting offers to cooperate with the Germans. He died in 1944 of meningitis.

Streets in Kraków, Przemyśl and Tenczynku, as well as the Cracovia stadium, are named after him. In 2017, a monument to him was unveiled in front of the venue. In 2022, the documentary film 'Józef Kałuża -Legenda wiecznie żywa' was made and won an award at the Football Film Festival 2023.
