Conservation and restoration of stone gravestones in cemeteries in France

In 2023, conservation and restoration work was carried out on stone gravestones located in France. Two are located in Brittany and one in Normandy:

Leopold Gucki's tombstone in the Misericorde cemetery in Nantes,
Tombstone of Józef Obalski in the cemetery in Machecoul near Nantes,
the tombstone of Ludwik Jan Celiński in the cemetery in Trouville-Sur-Mer.

The work is being carried out by stone conservator-restorer Jakub Kurkiewicz, who is also the author of the conservation programmes.

Conservation work on the tombstone of Ludwik Jan Celinski in the cemetery in Trouville-Sur-Mer, France, has come to an end. The monument was made after 1872 and stands out from the rest. The stele is decorated with the Zaremba coat of arms and the marble slab bears a Polish inscription.

Ludwik Jan Celiński of Zaremba coat of arms (1814-1877) was born in Koniemłoty. As a young Polish army officer, he emigrated to France after the November Rising of 1830. He attended the School of the General Staff in Paris and the School of Bridges and Roads. He is the author of the first bridge over the Touques, the so-called Pont de l'Union, and the architect of the Villa Montebello (1865), which now houses the French art museum.

Joseph Obalski (1807-1891), a participant in the November Uprising, is buried in the cemetery at Machecoul near Nantes. In 2023, conservation and restoration work began on his tombstone.

The conservation work was carried out in 2023 as part of the strategic programme of the Institute of Polonics 'Protection of Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad'.
