St. Catherine Parish Church in Uhrynów

St Catherine's Parish Church in Uhrynow - Roman Catholic parish church, built in 1767-1779 in Uhrynow, closed in 1951, now in ruins.

History
The date of the establishment of the Uhrynow parish is unknown, but the 3rd quarter of the 15th century is the most common. The parish was mentioned in 1468, and its founder and colonizer was the then-owner of the village, Jan of Uhrynow. Originally it belonged to the Chelm diocese, after the first partition of Poland in 1782, it was briefly incorporated into the diocese of Przemyśl, and from 1787 to the end of its existence it was part of the diocese of Lviv.

With the establishment of the parish, the first wooden church was built in Uhrynów, dedicated to St Catherine. The temple burnt down and was restored in the first half of the 16th century with funds from the Muscovite voivode Piotr Gołdacz. It was a wooden building. Unfortunately, in the 2nd half of the 16th century, the church was turned into a Protestant congregation (probably Arian) and re-consecrated after the Catholics reclaimed it. The Cossack and Tatar invasion of Uhryn in 1648 probably contributed to the poor condition of the temple, which was described in sources from 1672 as no longer repairable and in need of replacement with a new building.

Before 1713, Ensign of the Bełz region Stanislaw Drużbic built a new, also wooden church on the site of the old one, which was renovated in 1714. A wooden bell tower was erected next to the church. By the mid-18th century, the church was in need of repair and its walls were leaning slightly. In 1763 it was described in documents as "crumbling". A new brick temple did not begin to be built until 1767, with the financial support of the then owner of Uhrynov, Kyiv voivode Franciszek Saleze Potocki. In 1772, the chancel was almost finished and the walls of the nave were built to the height of the windows. The construction was finally completed and the interior furnished by 1779, when the temple was consecrated. A new wooden vicarage was also built in 1772. There were three altars in the interior of the church. The main altar was made of brick and formed part of the chancel divisions, the two wooden side altars were replaced in 1902, and a new pulpit was made in 1904.

The church was essentially unharmed during the First World War. The Austrians only requisitioned the 135-kilogram bell. Bolshevik troops looted the gilded chalice paten in 1920.

Significant damage was done during World War II, when a shell damaged the sacristy. Between May 1945 and July 1946, the church was looted and the vicarage demolished. Despite the damage, the church was probably functioning again in 1948, the harmonium was repaired and the sacristy was roofed in 1950, new liturgical paraments and a nativity scene with a set of figures were also purchased. In 1951, work in the church included painting the interior.

After the boundary correction in mid-1951, the church was closed and the Poles were evicted. The temple was successively converted into a warehouse for grain, sugar, flax fibre and then agricultural chemicals. Since 1990, the building has been abandoned, functionless and deteriorating rapidly. It now stands in a state of far-reaching disrepair.

Architecture
The church is located in the centre of the village, at the crossroads of the main roads. It is an oriented, brick, plastered, rectangular-plan building with a three-bay nave and a single-span chancel closed trilaterally on the inside and semicircularly on the outside. To the sides are bricked up annexes to the vault and sacristy. The divisions of the interior are formed by Tuscan pilasters carrying the beam. In the presbytery, the main altar is formed by two of the six semi-columns in the chancel. Reeded plastered ceilings throughout the church.

The single-storey façade, with a concave-convex finial, is preceded by a porch that is square in plan. The façade and side elevations are divided by pilasters.

The wide and massive porch is a remnant of the tower that was planned in 1772, but not realised in the end. The form of the church presents simple architectural solutions typical of the 3rd and 4th quarters of the 18th century. The most interesting element was the backstage, illusionistically designed arrangement of the main altar, which was intended to give the impression of a space larger than it actually was. According to sources, most of the 16th- and 18th-century liturgical paraments resisted Austrian contributions and survived in the Hyrnov church until the outbreak of World War II.
