Grave of the January Uprising insurgents

At the edge of the cemetery, on the slope of the Niewiaż River valley, 25 insurgents from the combined units of Paweł Staniewicz, Medard Kończy and Father Antoni Mackiewicz, killed in the battle of Swietobrość on 19.10.1863, were buried in a mass grave. The unprepared insurgents, under the overall command of Father Mackiewicz, were attacked and smashed by a column of the tsarist army, led by Captain Rudanowski. Among those killed was one of the insurgent commanders, Pawel Staniewicz. According to residents' accounts, the monument was removed and buried in the ground in 1938. After Lithuania regained its independence, it was unearthed and repositioned, at which time new inscriptions were added. The inscription: ŽUVUSIEMS 1863 M. / SUKILELIAMS. / GARBE NUGALETIEMS!" ("To the fallen insurgents of 1863 / in tribute to the victorious"). The facade of the monument is decorated with the words of the Lithuanian anthem: "IŠ PRAEITIES / TAVO SUNUS / TE STIPRYBĘ / SEMIA!" "ČIA UŽKASTI 75 / SUKILELIAI, / ŽUVĘ / NUO ŽIAURIOS / CARO RANKOS" ("From the past may your sons draw strength // Here rest 75 insurgents, fallen from the cruel hand of the Tsar").
