Gombrowicz Museum in Vence

The Gombrowicz Museum in Vence is not a museum in the strict sense of the word. Although it is set up in the flat once occupied by Witold Gombrowicz, only a few mementos can be seen here. The space has been organised as a multimedia exhibition introducing the writer's life and creative concepts. Visiting the museum is about experiencing - sounds, smells, mirror reflections, films, photographs or quotations - for example, the 'Genealogies' room presents photocopies of family documents, but also reminds visitors of the 'Ferdydurke' read at school and Gombrowicz's notions of 'bottom', 'mouth' and 'calf'.

The building - Villa Alexandrine - was built in 1911, the Belle Époque, and named after the daughter of the wealthy carpenter who owned the house. Witold Gombrowicz and Rita Labrosse (his wife since 1968) lived here between 1964 and 1969. After Gombrowicz's death, the villa was neglected and was only renovated between 2016 and 2017 (with funds from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage). Since 2017, it has housed the Espace Museal Gombrowicz - run by the Gombrowicz Museum in Wsola, a branch of Warsaw's Museum of Literature. The Gombrowicz Museum popularises the writer's work and, more broadly, promotes Polish culture: it organises events, exhibitions, discussions and meetings with Polish authors.

There is also a plaque on the façade of the museum commemorating the fact that Gombrowicz lived in the building.
