New quarters in Defenders of Lviv Cemetery

The text, accompanied by a photograph, describes the restoration of part of Lviv's cemetery. The works were carried out from 21.05.37 to 19.06.37 under the direction of R. Smicinski. As the article states, due to the nature of the drying ground, considerable earthworks were carried out and low graves with geometric flowerbeds were arranged. At present, this section contains 84 graves (Source: "Wschód", Lviv 1937, no. 52, p. 8, after: Jagiellonian Digital Library).

A modernised reading of the text

New quarters in the Lviv Defenders Cemetery for 84 fallen.

The complex of graves of the Defenders of Lviv on the left side of the cemetery needed thorough cleaning. Therefore, in accordance with the order of the President of the Main Board of the Reservists' Union on the obligation to fulfil a "Civic Deed", the work of cleaning up this complex was undertaken by the Plantation Circle of the city of Lviv of the Reservists' Union under the direction of the inspector of the city plantations, Mr Rafal Smicinski. The work was carried out from 21 May this year to 19 May this year, with 92 members of the Circle and 56 non-members working there, 148 people in total, completely selflessly. They worked a total of 1,163 hours, or 145 days.

The earthworks were carried out on an area covering 990 m³. As the ground is strongly drying, considerable earthworks had to be carried out, with the excavation and embankment amounting to 225 cubic metres, and every three graves were connected with passageways for pedestrian traffic. Low graves with geometric flowerbeds were arranged. Thanks to this system of graves, the Defenders of Lviv cemetery acquired a beautiful quarter, artistically configured with 84 graves. At the same time, many damaged crosses were repaired.

The work was carried out under the personal direction of Inspector Smicinski. On one occasion, a ceremony was held to place this section under the care of the Society for the Guarding of the Graves of Polish Heroes. A branch of the Plantation Circle of the city of Lwow Z.R., with its district president, chief commander Szpaczynski, stood by the cemetery. Szpaczyński and a large audience. The reservists gathered were addressed by the president and district commander of the Z.R. Col. Pieniążek, thanking them for their hardships. Then the Z.R. civic education officer, Counsellor Dziędzielewicz, raised the civic feat of the reservists as an example of deeds for other branches, and encouraged those present to continue their sacrificial work.

Inspector Smicinski, in turn, presented the development of the technical works carried out, and, thanking the reservists and others for their work, separately thanked a group of reservists of the Circle from the Park Wiśniowski area who had particularly distinguished themselves in the work of the "Civic Deed". Finally, on behalf of the Union of Lviv Defenders, the vice-president, Major KI Ink, thanked the reservists for their comradely service to the fallen Defenders of Lviv. After these speeches, the Board of Directors of the Society for the Guarding of Graves took the quarters into its further care.
