Łohojsk

This town, now owned by Count Oskar Tyszkiewicz, located in the former Minsk Province, Borisov District, on the Ilya River, is a very ancient settlement. Its name seems to derive from the Belarusian word "loh", meaning animal's lair or a valley in the forest, as it is indeed located in a cleft between hill ranges. The Kyiv chronicles mention a castle here in the 12th century, which was captured in 1128 by Isislav, who fought with his brother Mstislav, Prince of Kyiv. At that time, the area must have been densely populated, as there are traces of numerous hordes, or castles, for miles around the town.

In 1505, when the Tatars were plundering Lithuania, the owner of Lohiysk was Symon prince Czartoryski, during whose absence the horde captured and burnt the fortified wooden castle and took the prince's sons into slavery. Because of this terrible defeat, Sigismund I confirmed the inheritance of these estates to the said Duke Symon in 1508. His daughter, Alexandra, was married to Wasyl Tyszkiewicz, who later became Voivode of Podlasie, and from then on, the Łahojskie estate remained in the hands of the Tyszkiewicz family. Vasily rebuilt the burnt-down castle, including the Orthodox church, and one of his sons, Alexander, founded a Catholic parish church here in 1609. In 1609 he founded a catholic parish church.

In 1706, during the Second Swedish War, the army of Charles XII burnt down the town and the castle again, but the ruins were no longer there, as Stanislav Tiškevičius, the starost of Samogitia, only rebuilt the church itself, and built a monastery for the Basilians on the site where the castle had stood. In the forests surrounding the Lahore estate, there are many graves of unknown origin, or so-called barrows, in which various antiquities are sometimes unearthed.
