Description of the Czernatyński palace.

One of the monuments of our more sophisticated architectural taste is the magnificent palace in Cherniatyn, located in the Podolia province, Lytyn district. It was built in 1830, thanks to the efforts of the estate's heir, Mr Ignacy Vitoslavsky, according to the plan and under the supervision of the architect Wioch. Both the purely Gothic exterior of the building and its tastefully furnished interior were the subject of general admiration in the area for several years. The library containing several thousand volumes, the English park, the orangery founded and tended by Mikler, an Englishman once brought to Puławy; furthermore, the walls of the palace tiled with mosaics and inlaid with mother-of-pearl floors, the flat roof with gothic towers, and on it a group of orange trees and cypresses set in summer - all this created a long series of rare curiosities. When you add the beautiful nature of the Podolia region to the various art inventions: spacious oak woods, lush wheat fields, silvery ponds with willows bathing in their smooth surface, and a wealthy and prosperous population living in a village as large as a city, it is easy to imagine this charming residence of a wealthy heir. Unfortunately, circumstances did not favour its preservation in its former splendour. As a result of complicated property interests, the Chernatyniansky palace, together with its estates, is now in danger of passing into other industrial hands, so its former splendour is visibly disappearing. The palace and gardens, the library and the ancient monuments of the house have all been badly neglected in recent times. It is to be feared that, with some of the gothic towers on the roof having been knocked down, the remainder of the historic buildings may also become the prey of time and a lack of care.
