Description of Kraslaw Town Hall

A short note describes the Kraslaw town hall, built in 1752 by Konstantin Ludwik Plater, governor of Mstislavl. The note mentions that Kraslaw has since then been one of the foci of social and commercial life in Inflants, but due to changes "in national relations", the town hall now "stands empty" (Source: Tygodnik Illustrowany, Warsaw 1882, Series 3, T:13, p. 146, after: University of Lodz Digital Library).

Kraslaw Town Hall

The Kraslaw Town Hall is one of the quite numerous architectural monuments of the 18th century beyond the Daugava River, which could rightly be called Saxon in our country because of the kings of the House of Saxony who ruled at that time. The building was erected in 1752 by Konstantin Ludvik Plater, Voivode of Mstislavl, who inherited the Kraslaw estate from his father, Jan Ludvik, Voivode of Livonia, and elevated the former settlement to the rank of a town. From then on, Kraslaw continued to be one of the centres of commercial and social life in Inflants. However, changes in national relations did not leave the development of the town unaffected, and the town hall stands empty today, being the private property of the present-day owner of Kraslaw.
