Description of Rivne

The text describes the town of Rivne on the Ustya, which initially belonged to Mary Semyonova, later to the Ostrogski dukes, and finally came into the hands of the Lubomirski dukes. The palace in Rivne, which belonged to the Lubomirskis, is mentioned (Source: "Tygodnik Illustrowany", Warsaw 1872, Series 2, T:9, pp. 93, 96 after: Digital Library of the University of Lodz).

Description of Rivne.

Giving here woodcuts depicting the palace of the Lubomirski family and the gymnasium in Rivne, and not having at hand a detailed description of this ancient seat of Volhynia, we repeat what "Ancient Poland" by Baliński and Lipiński writes in this regard. Rivne, on the river Ustya and a large pond, one of the ancient towns in this part of the country, may have received its name from its location on a level spot. At the beginning of the 16th century, it belonged to a widowed duchess Maria Semyonovna (Olizarova?), whose dispute with the Dziewšice estate was settled by Sigismund I in 1515. The fact that the estate belonged to the Ostrogski dukes is evidenced by a record from 1548, according to which Beata of Kościelecki, widow of Duke Elijah, endowed the church in Rivne. Passing through various hands, the town became the property of the Lubomirski dukes, and of these, Joseph, starosta of Rromanów, was granted a privilege in 1778 to hold a four-sunday fair, beginning on St George's Day, according to the ancient calendar. There is a palace of the Lubomirski dukes, converted from the former castle (now a picture). The town now has a population of about 6000, and has a gymnasium.
