Kraszewski's villa near Dresden

In a jubilee year in which the whole nation prepares to honour the most distinguished of its writers, everything that is in any way connected with the person of the august jubilarian arouses special interest. We think it will also be pleasing to our readers to hear a description of Kraszewski's modest abode, previously given to us by Mr Napoleon Orda.

This cottage, in the Swiss style, is situated out of the way, under a forest that is now cut off. In the past, squirrels often paid him a visit here. It is surrounded by trees, silence and emptiness. Right next to it flows the river Briesnitz, in Polish Brzeźnica, as many birch trees once grew here. The view over the forest and meadow is completely rural.

The interior furnishings are not exquisite, but they are comfortable, suitable for the needs of a freelance writer who was able and willing to work for ten. One has to walk three quarters of an hour to the town centre, but this does not prevent Kraszewski from making this journey quite often on foot. May God preserve for a long time to come this judge, cultivating his native soil, this robustness of body and mind, to the benefit of the society of which he is the pride and support.
