Poles buried in French Army quarters in Istanbul

The plaque commemorating French soldiers killed in Turkey between 1914 and 1918, located in Istanbul, also features two Polish names: Boleslaw Czajkowski and Franciszek Radomski.

The monument forms the centrepiece of the French military quarters, located in the St John Chrysostom sector. Three rows of 36 graves are arranged in front of the monument, making a total of 108 individual graves.

The outside of the monument bears the inscription:
"1914 - FRANCE TO ITS SONS - 1918".

While inside the monument is the inscription:
"FORMER SOLDIERS TO THEIR COMRADES FROM ISTANBUL WHO FELL FOR FRANCE 1914-1918".

Below this is a list of the fallen Levantine soldiers, with four lines from a poem by Charles Péguy entitled "The fallen of the Levant". "Happy those who fell".

This monument is an important testimony to Istanbul's multicultural history and to the participation of soldiers of different nationalities - including Poles - in the war effort alongside the French army.
