Polish church in Natal

A brief note mentions the town of Mariamhill in Natal, in the Union of South Africa. The text is accompanied by a photograph of St Joseph's Church in Mariamhill. The correspondent, Fr Kowalewski, mentions that there are not many Poles in Natal, but he also mentions compatriots living in South Africa, who reside in Transvsal and Cape Town, among other places (Source: "Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny", Krakow 1936, no. 110, p. 6, after: Małopolska Biblioteka Cyfrowa).

A modernised reading of the text

Poles are also in Natal.

On many occasions we have published letters from various parts of the world, even from the most exotic regions, written to our editorial office by our Polish readers. We have also stressed more than once that there is probably not a remote and wild corner of the world without a Pole in it.
We have now received a letter from a rather exotic locality, namely Mariamhill in Natal, in the Union of South Africa. This letter is written to us by Father Klaudiusz Kowalewski, who is such a missionary. We have already received a letter from him and sent our distant compatriot some copies of a booklet on Mariamhill published by the I. K. C. booklet on Marshal Piłsudski. Now Fr. Kovalevsky sends us his sincere thanks for this book, which has brought great joy to several brethren at the mission in Mariamhill.

At the same time, Fr Kowalewski writes to us that it is very rare to meet Poles in Natal. Instead, there are quite a lot of Poles in the Transvaal, where they work in the mines, and in Cape Town. In Natal, Fr Kowalewski met one Pole near the town of Ixepo, Mr N, who is the postmaster in Ixepo. In the township of Dundee there is a school inspector with a Polish name.

Fr Kowalewski points out that the few Poles in Natal are looked after by the Polish consulate in Cape Town, sending magazines and books. For the information of our readers who would perhaps also like to send some journals or magazines to the Polish mission in Mariamhill, we give Fr Klaudiusz Kowalewski's address:
