Monument to Bishop Bandurski in Lviv

The text mentions a project for the construction of a monument to Bishop Bandurski, to be erected on the square at the junction of Łyczakowska and Cłowa Streets. It is stated that the committee has a fund of more than 55,000 zloty and a design for the monument has been selected. An exhibition of the bishop's memorabilia is also planned (Source: "Wschód", Lviv 1936, no. 11, p. 6, after: Jagiellonian Digital Library).

A modernised reading of the text

The Building Committee for the Monument to the late Bishop Bandursky in Lviv.

The Committee for the Construction of a Monument to the late Bishop Bandurski in Lviv will soon proceed with the erection of a monument on the square allocated for this purpose at the junction of Lychakivska and Cicha Streets. Due to the importance of the matter, the first chairman of the Committee, the president of the city of Stanislawow, Dr. L. Stronski, arrived at the meeting and took over the chairmanship of the meeting together with the present chairman, Mr. Irzyk.

From the report presented by the treasurer, director of the PKO, Mr Baczynski, it turned out that the Committee already has at its disposal a fund of 50,000 zloty, deposited in the contribution books of the M.K.O. and the PKO, which will allow it to start preparatory work for the construction of the monument in the near future. Especially as the material for the bronze casting of the monument was promised to be supplied to the Committee by General Składkowski from cannons left over from the legionary battles. Further donations will undoubtedly flow in generously to enable the work begun to be completed.

On this occasion, it is worth emphasising - as President Dr. Stroński made clear in his speech - that the funds collected were almost entirely made up of voluntary donations from all over Poland, and not from governmental or self-governmental interventions. It is therefore a true act of piety by the public for the Great Priest. The design for the monument chosen by the jury, made by the well-known and honoured sculptor Ms Janina Reichertówna with the collaboration of Mr Eng. arch. Wnuk, presented to the assembly in large models, gained full approval.

The jury that made the selection consisted of Rev. Minkiewicz, Prof. Iwaszkiewicz, Rev. Pudłacha and Eng. Homag, as well as members of the Committee: Messrs Irzyk, Bogdanowiczowa, Col. Wielgut, Dr Baczynski, Major Rybicki, Dr Boratyński and the Committee's secretary Capt Kumor. The design has high sculptural and architectural qualities, and the whole makes a truly monumental impression. In particular, the inspired figure of the Great Preacher captivates with the force of expression and power of gesture. The monument will be 8 metres high, with the figure of Father Bishop Bandurski placed on a 2-metre high plinth.

The second matter discussed at the meeting was the vision for an exhibition of the Great Bishop's memorabilia. Captain Kumor informed the audience that Lviv had received 5 chests of priceless mementoes of Bishop Bandurski from Vilnius. In order to give the general public an opportunity to get to know this valuable legacy and to multiply the funds for the construction of the monument, the Committee is preparing an exhibition of these mementoes.

Not content with the gift received, however, the exhibition's organiser, Dr Rachwal, has asked individuals and various towns to help acquire all the relics left behind by the great priest for the exhibition. The exhibition will open in May and will probably arouse the liveliest interest among the general public, for whom the memory of him who, together with the Marshal at the side of God's people, led the Nation to liberation is always dear.
