The Church of St Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, is a gem of Baroque Dubrovnik. The architecture of the church is inspired by Rome's Il Gesù church. Construction of the church began in 1699, designed by Andrea Pozzo, an Italian painter, architect and Jesuit, and was completed with its consecration in 1725, as evidenced by the inscription above the main entrance. Between 1735 and 1738, Gaetano Garzia, probably of Spanish origin but educated in Naples, produced frescoes referring to the life of St Ignatius. In them, he referred to the Pozza iconographic scheme from the Roman church. They are an apotheosis of St Ignatius, who is looked at from the side by two saints. One of them is St Stanislaus Kostka, shown in an illusionistic niche with a shell in his conch. He is dressed in the Jesuit habit, with a lily in his right hand and a staff resting on his elbow-bent left arm. He stands on a pedestal with the inscription S. STANISLAUS K. painted on it. The process for the beatification of Stanislaus Kostka began at the end of the 16th century and led to him becoming the first Jesuit to be raised to the altar in 1606, after Pope Paul V agreed to his beatification. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the order, was beatified three years later in 1609. Stanislaus Kostka's canonisation process took longer, as it was only in 1726 that Pope Benedict XIII issued the canonisation bull. Although, of course, the cult of St Stanislaus Kostka spread most widely in Poland, he was popular within the Order. His short life served as a model of Christian devotion to youth. All this led to his figure appearing in a fresco of a church in Dubrovnik.
