Restoration of the Polish inscription on the monument in Pietwałda

A short note describes the issue of the town's Pietwald cemetery and the Polish inscription on the cross. The inscription was removed in 1937 by "Czech chauvinists" and has now been restored to its original state (Source: "Dziennik Polski", Czeski Cieszyn 1939, R: 6, no. 101, p. 3, after: Silesian Digital Library).

A modernised reading of the text

Restoration of the Polish inscription on the cemetery monument.

One of the proofs that Pietwałd had always been a purely Polish municipality was the monument in the local cemetery, erected by the local parishioners in 1870, when, according to official Czech statistics, more than 90 per cent of the 2300 inhabitants of Pietwałd were Poles. This monument bore the following inscription for 67 years:

"As a confession of the hope of the resurrection of life through Christ, the Lord, also out of love for their dear departed, here in the Lord resting, this sign of redemption was erected by the local parishioners in the year p. 1870." .

This inscription was a thorn in the side of the Czech chauvinists and was removed in 1937. Now, thanks to the efforts of Government Commissioner Mr St. Kwiatkowski, the inscription on the beautiful marble monument has been reinstated in the same form as before.
