Ancestral gallery of Duke Elector of Bavaria Karl I Albercht

One of the most spectacular areas of the palace is the Ancestors' Gallery (Ahnengalerie), created in the 18th century. Among the 121 portraits of members of the Wittelsbach family densely filling the richly decorated rococo hall are three portraits of princesses from the Polish ruling families.

The most recognisable of these is Teresa Kunegunda Sobieska (1676-1730), daughter of King Jan III Sobieski, who married Maximilian Emmanuel, Elector of Bavaria. The second princess whose portrait can be seen in the ancestors' gallery is Maria Anna Sophie Wettyn (1728-1797), daughter of August III of Saxony (whose portrait can also be admired in the gallery), and wife of the Bavarian Elector Maximilian III Joseph. The third lady is the wife of Emperor Ferdinand I of Habsburg - Anna Jagiellonka (1503-1547). The daughter of the ruler of the Bohemian and Hungarian thrones, Ladislaus II, she was the niece of King Sigismund the Old of Poland. She had fifteen children. One of her eleven daughters, Anna Habsburg, entered the Wittelsbach family through her marriage to Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria (1528-1579).
