"Polish well" in Kappelen

The 2nd Infantry Rifle Division, which had taken part in the fighting in France since 1939, was ordered to evacuate to Switzerland after running out of ammunition. On the night of 19-20 June 1940, some 13,000 Polish soldiers belonging to the unit crossed the Swiss border. They were interned by the local authorities and stayed until the end of the war in camps specially set up for them in various regions of the country, where they were encouraged to work for the local economy. In the Kapellen cemetery, in front of the entrance to the 13th-century Reformed church, there is a terrazzo-made 'Polish well' by W. Kalakailo and W. Jochim commemorating these events. Its construction consists of an octagonal bowl and a fountain, the top of which is crowned by a polyhedron, and the side walls bear the metal coats of arms of Switzerland, Poland, Bern and Kappelen. Below the Swiss coat of arms is the inscription: "Der Gemeinde Kappelen / zur Erinnerung / die Internierten Polen / 1940-1945" (The community of Kappelen in tribute to the interned Poles 1940-1945).
