Symbolic grave of the soldiers of the 27th Volhynian Infantry Division of the Home Army killed in 1944 while crossing the river

In 1944, the Germans intensified their military operations, which threatened some units of the 27th Volhynian Infantry Division of the Home Army with total destruction. In view of this situation, some commanders took dramatic decisions to turn the units over to the Soviet side. In such a situation, in May 1944, the grouping of Captain Kazimierz Rzaniak "Garda" found itself. The soldiers, pressed from various sides by the Germans, were forced to cross the front line, which at that time ran along the Pripyat River. A patrol sent earlier by Capt. Rzaniak failed to forestall the Soviet side and on 27.05.1944 the soldiers crossing the river came under both German and Soviet artillery fire. It was only when a few partisans crossed the river and informed of the unit's intention to cross to the Soviet side that the Soviet artillery shifted its fire to the German army positions. The losses of Capt. "Garda"'s grouping during this crossing amounted to 40-50% of its personnel - about 200 soldiers who found death in the river currents.

On 27.05.2002, in the place where the Polish soldiers started crossing the Pripyat River, a ceremony was held to consecrate a cross placed on a symbolic grave of the AK soldiers. The commemoration was created thanks to the efforts of former soldiers of the 27th WDP AK, with funding from the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Remembrance. The inscription on the commemoration reads: "On 27 May 1944, in these fields and in the waters of the Pripyat / during an attempt to cross the front line on the river, more than 200 Polish partisan soldiers / from the 27th Volhynian Infantry Division of the Home Army died. / This cross is a commemoration of these events / and a symbol of our gratitude and remembrance / 01.11.2001. Compatriots."
