Grave of Polish airmen of September 1939 in the municipal cemetery

On 6 September 1939, a Lublin R-XIIID aircraft from the 56th Observational Squadron assigned to the aviation of the "Carpathian" Army (formerly the 56th Companion Squadron of the 5th Aviation Regiment in Lida), crewed by Cpl. pilot Marian Piasecki and Lt. observer Edward Porada, took off from the airport in Mrowla near Rzeszów with the task of reconnaissance in Slovakia. In the Prešov area, it was attacked by Slovak Avia B-534 fighters from the 45th Fighter Squadron (45 stíhací letka) and shot down by one of the Slovak pilots, after which it caught fire and crashed near the village of Ostrovany, north-west of Prešov. Both pilots died on the spot.
After a few days, they were given a funeral and buried in the Prešov city cemetery in a common grave with no personal details. It was not until 1998 that Prešov historians established the name of one of the aviators - Edward Porada - after which a plaque was placed on the grave with the following inscription: "Pilot Lt. Edward Porada, posorovatel desatnik unknown. 56 Polish Eskadra. Zestreleni pri obce Ostrovany 6 septembra 1939 r., letadlo R - XIII Lublin" [Pilot Lt. Edward Porada, observer corporal unknown 56 Polish Eskadra. Shot down near the village of Ostrovany on 6 September 1939, aircraft R-XIII Lublin].
In Polish aviation documentation - on the list of losses of Polish flying personnel in 1939. - next to the names of the crew members of the downed aircraft, there was only the notation: "they did not return from their assignment", while further details of their death and burial were unknown. Thanks to arrangements in 1998, the grave was located and both names were soon placed on it. They were inscribed on an aerial chequerboard placed on the cross. The border of the grave was completed with a low metal fence in red and white.
Nowadays, the grave has been rebuilt - there is a grand monument made of light-coloured granite put up in 2019 as a result of cooperation between the Polish Consulate in Prešov and the Institute of National Remembrance. The following inscription is engraved on the monument in Polish and Slovak:
TU SPOŁY / POR. OBS. EDWARD PORADA / OBR. 1910 / KPR. PIL. MARIAN PIASECKI / D.O.B. 1916 / ZAŁOGA SAMOLOTU LUBLIN R.XIII D / Z 56. ESKADRY OBSERWACYJNEJ / POLSKIEGO LOTNICTWA WOJSKOWEGO / POLEGLI W BOJU POWIETRZNYM 6 IX 1939
Grób polskich lotników znajduje się w kwaterze G – pomiędzy kwaterami słowackich i niemieckich grobów wojennych.
