On December 20, 2018, a plaque was unveiled in Lviv, funded by the Polonika Institute, dedicated to prof. Mieczysław Gębarowicz. He began his studies in 1912 in Lviv, but was interrupted by World War I, during which he was drafted into the army. He also took part in the defense of Lviv in 1918. After the war, he worked first at the University of Lviv, then at the National Institute. Ossoliński family, from 1923 he was the curator of the Lubomirski Museum. In 1928, after defending his habilitation thesis, he received the rank of assistant professor, and in 1936, professor. During World War II, appointed by Prince Andrzej Lubomirski as the informal director of the Ossoliński plant, he was responsible for the protection of the collections. In 1944, he also decided to stay in Lviv to guard the Ossoliński plant. Thanks to his determination, in 1944 part of the Ossolino collection - approx. 2.3 thousand manuscripts, including autographs of works by Mickiewicz (including "Pan Tadeusz"), Słowacki, Fredro, Reymont, Sienkiewicz and 2.4 thousand Polish drawings and engravings - came to Poland, becoming the basis for establishing the Ossolineum in Wrocław. To his efforts we also owe the subsequent return of numerous books (approx. 67,000), prints from the 19th and 20th centuries (over 107,000), manuscripts (over 7,000 and old prints (over 35,000). In 1950, he was dismissed from his job and demoted to the rank of a junior academic worker. He faced further harassment in 1962 after publishing in Poland a book about works of art in Lviv entitled: Studies on the history of artistic culture of the late Renaissance in Poland. In the post-war period, he was also the author of many other texts on the history of art. Finally, in 1981 commissioned by the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences, he prepared his autobiography. He died in Lviv on September 2, 1984. He is buried at the Lychakiv Cemetery in the Klamut family tomb.

The plaque unveiled in Lviv was created thanks to the involvement of the National Institute. Ossolińscy in Wrocław in cooperation with the authorities of the city of Lviv.

The plaque was placed on the tenement house at ul. Stećki 9 (formerly ul. Senatorska), where prof. Gębarowicz lived for over half a century.
