A modernised reading of the text

Tomb of Zofia Zamojska, née Czartoryska, in Florence

In the Church of the Holy Cross, in a sumptuous but very solemn chapel, we find that tomb in white marble, a masterpiece by the professor of the Florentine Academy, Bartolini, who died only a few years ago, erected over the corpse of the noblest of our matrons, the first founder of the Warsaw Charity Society, sister of the Dukes Adam and Konstanty Czartoryski. Undoubtedly not only among the Polish, it is probably the most beautiful of all Italian monuments of contemporary chisel work, the work of a great master, for that was Bartolini.

The idea behind this monument is not new, indeed, it is ancient, repeated on almost all tombs of the 17th century, the only difference being that the figure of the deceased is not portrayed in her refined funeral robes in an open coffin, but on her deathbed, as if in death, with an expression of peace, frightening with truth and painting a life not extinguished, but only escaping into the realm of eternity - and a beautiful, peaceful life; this is also why parting with her seems to herald only a short journey. It is impossible to look at this monument without a shudder, without being impressed.

Kremer devoted several pages to the description of this tomb, and in his admiration he called it a veritable efflorescence of Christian art. One of the more recent German writers on Italy, Edward von Lossow, in his "Reisebuch für Italien, Berlin 1853", also raves about this monument, calling it a work of art so sublime that it alone is worth a trip to Florence. Such an opinion from a German, usually prejudiced against foreign things, is the clearest testimony to the excellence of this tomb.
