On the road from Wilkomierz to Dynaburg, a few miles from the first town, lies the town of Uciany on the right, inhabited by Old Believers housed in small wooden houses. There is a church here as well, and beyond it stretches the village cemetery. From between the graves, which buried the trace of many people's existence here, rises a cross, commemorating the resting place of the young poetess. Karolina Proniewska owed her development not to anyone's care, but to her work and independent will. The recognition she found among her own people did not make her vanity, and her works exude such truth and warmth that it is impossible to remain indifferent when reading them. In order to make herself useful to the community, she spared no expense with her health, spent her nights studying, and this was the cause of her untimely death. Karolina Proniewska was born in Samogitia on 18 January 1830. Her father died early, so she grew up with her mother, a poor widow. This orphanhood exposed her to poverty; she received a very modest upbringing; however, her poetic abilities began to show early on in occasional poems and larger works, such as: "Three rays of the spirit" and "The heart of a woman". The young author's poems came out in print in a booklet entitled: "Songs and Songlets of Karolina Proniewska". Her poetical position is best emphasised by a skit which begins a poem written in her honour by A. E. Odyniec:
. "A bird sings
In the shade of the trees
Nothing troubles him,
Does it in silence
Who hears,
His song comprehends."
Karolina Proniewska spent the last years of her life not in Telšiai, but with her uncle in Uciany; she died here in 1859 on May 26, at the age of 29. Her friends erected a wooden cross for her, with the following inscription:
. "She sang little songs,
To the great God for glory,
To his saints and angels,
In memory of her friends.".
