Action by the American Polish community in support of the Glory Memorial in the Lviv Cemetery

A short note presents the issue of the foundation of the Monument of Glory commemorating the fight for Lviv and Eastern Lesser Poland to belong to the Republic of Poland. The text mentions the 17th Sejm of the Polish Association, during which a resolution was passed to fund one of the columns of the monument - 7,017 zloty were sent to the Presidium of the Guardians of Polish Graves (Source: "Wschód", Lviv 1936, no. 1, p. 4, after: Jagiellonian Digital Library).

A modernised reading of the text.

Action by Polish American men and women for the Glory Monument in the cemetery.

The twelve columns that make up the magnificent Monument of Glory of the Cemetery of the Defenders of Lviv are not only of architectural significance. They are also meant to be a solemn symbol of the fact that the whole of Poland unites in a collective tribute to the glorious deed of the Defenders of Lviv. Each of them has - or will have - its own founder! While the first column shows the city of Lwow as the founder, the second column shows the city of Poznan, and the third column shows the Lwow City Riflemen's Association, new indelible words have now been engraved on the fourth column. For it was founded by the Union of Polish Women in America, a powerful organisation with over 60,000 members. At the 17th Assembly of the Association, held last autumn in Chicago, a resolution was passed to fund one column of the Monument of Glory, as a permanent manifestation of the tribute of American women to the Fighters for the belonging of Lviv and the Eastern Lesser Poland to the Republic of Poland. Following this resolution, the sum of 7,017 zloty was sent to the Presidium of the Guardians of the Graves of Polish Heroes as a foundation gift. Having received this sum, the Guard of the Graves immediately proceeded to engrave the inscription on the column, which was done in the first days of December. However, the evidence of the American Polish community's piety for the heroes of the Lviv battles does not end there. Recently, another great Polish organisation in America, i.e. the Polish National Union in Chicago (Illinois), notified the Guard of the Memorial of Polish Heroes that it intends to fund one column of the Monument of Glory, at the same time sending with this notification 3,600 zlotys, indicating that the second half of the sum will soon be sent to complete the foundation. Further columns are still unnamed, but will probably not wait too long for the founders. After all, there can be no more beautiful manifestation of patriotism than the engraving of the founder's name in this mausoleum of heroism, which is for present and future generations, for one's own and for foreigners, the supreme expression of the steadfast Polish will to maintain, even at the supreme sacrifice of blood and life, the integrity of the borders of the Republic.
