Bohdan Paczowski

Bohdan Paczowski was born on 5 June 1930 in Warsaw and died on 26 January 2017 in Luxembourg. He studied architecture at the Cracow University of Technology and then nostrified his diploma at the Politecnico di Milano in 1968. From 1969 to 1980 he ran an architectural studio in Milan, then from 1980 to 1990 in Paris, and from around 1989 he was active in Luxembourg, where he ran the studio Paczowski et Fritsch Architectes .

In the course of his activities, Paczowski has participated in many international architectural competitions, in which he has won numerous prizes. His projects include the design of a hospital in Aubervilliers, France, the laboratories of the Cochin Hospital in Paris, the extension of the seat of the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg (1994), the passenger terminal of the Luxembourg airport (2008) and the Luxembourg pavilion at Expo '92 in Seville. In 2009, he won the competition to design the Museum of Polish History in Warsaw. He said the following about the latter in an interview with the Dziennik newspaper:

"As soon as I found out that it was about creating a project set in an area I knew as a child, memories came flooding back".

He approached his work in a deeper way. He used to say that "architectural design is not just designing buildings, but designing places that have to fill with some content, with life".
The style of his work was characterised by both advanced utilitarian function and consideration of context. In this way, Paczowski combined design activity with theoretical reflection on architecture and culture.

In addition to architecture, Bogdan Paczowski was also an essayist, photographer and publicist. His photographic work documented the milieu of the Parisian 'Culture'. He wrote Seeing, a collection of essays on architecture and culture, published in Architectural Review, l'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui, Res Publice Nowa, Tygodnik Powszechny and Zeszyty Literackie, and Paths, among others. He was friends with, among others, Witold Gombrowicz , an acclaimed writer. His wife was Maria Paczkowska , also a novelist. He co-founded the Foundation of Architecture and Engineering in Luxembourg and was active as a member of national and international chambers of architecture.

He died on 26 January 2017 in Luxembourg.
