Konrad's cell in Vilnius

The note informs of the care which the Professional Union of Polish Writers in Vilnius has provided since 1929 for the so-called Konrad's Cell, where Adam Mickiewicz was imprisoned from 23 October 1823 to 21 April 1824. As part of its activities there, the union set up an artistic reading room, organised literary meetings called Literary Wednesdays, and contributed to the erection of a plaque commemorating Mickiewicz, who was imprisoned there, on the façade of the former monastery wing. Information from the magazine "Sztuki Piękne",1934, no. 7, p. 276 (public domain, reprinted from the Library of the University of Silesia, Katowice).

Vilnius

On Konrad's Cell. In view of the printing in some periodicals of news about Konrad's Cell, which hurt the guardians of this monument and are inconsistent with reality, the Union of Polish Writers in Vilnius requests the following explanation:

"The wing of the former Basilian monastery building at 9 Ostrobramska Street, in the government house, was given by the government authorities to the Professional Union of Polish Writers in Vilnius in 1929. Since then, the Union has had its headquarters there and has taken care of the historic room. In "Konrad's Cell",

in which, thanks to the efforts of the Union, a marble memorial plaque has been erected, has housed a reading room for art magazines for a year and a half, open daily to members and guests. The rules and regulations of the Reading Room, whose creator and host is the Council of the Vilnius B of Artistic Associations, guarantee complete respect for the commemorative place. The rest of the Association's premises consists of the Reading Room, where Literary Wednesdays, readings and concerts are held on a regular basis, and a spacious corridor, used for exhibitions. The headquarters of the R.W.Z.A. and Landscape Association are located in a further, separated part of the wing, which contains offices, a meeting room and the premises of a literary and artistic club. The club hosts discussion meetings and social evenings for members and named guests.

The content of these meetings and soirées revolves exclusively around vital literary and artistic matters, and their high standard is guaranteed by the Council Presidium, composed of eminent artists and cultural activists and headed by Professor Ludomir Ślendziński. Some of the programmes of the club's evenings are broadcast by the radio to the whole of Poland and are held in high regard by cultural circles. The above facts are made public by the Board of the Z.Z.L.P. in Vilnius, as the host of the premises where Cela Konrad is located.
