Former Truskavets 1827-1939

The object of the project was to produce a publication devoted to the history of the famous health resort located a few dozen kilometres south of Lviv.

The book 'Former Truskavets' is the result of several years' work by Ukrainian researcher Chrystyna Kharchuk, who researched and compiled numerous archives and gathered extensive iconography on the history of not only the spa itself, but also its architecture, much of which no longer exists.

The author takes a closer look at the history of Truskavets and enriches its history with the results of her research, adding a dictionary of architects and builders active in the locality. Above all, her queries have yielded rich iconographic material in the form of archival photographs, old postcards and architectural plans.

The 19th century brought the development of spas in Europe, which benefited from the therapeutic qualities of mineral waters. Among the popular spas, especially in the interwar period of the 20th century, was also Truskawiec, located in the then south-eastern lands of the Republic of Poland.

The heyday of the spa came after 1882. In the interwar period, there were well over 250 villas, hotels and guesthouses. The buildings erected from the end of the 19th century until 1939 were fashionable wooden guesthouses, spa houses or a long covered walking promenade, typical of spas, built in the Alpine-Swiss style and also in the Zakopane style, immersed in rich, varied greenery. In the 1930s, a decidedly different brick modernist architecture with light-coloured walls, large windows and flat roofs began to infiltrate it. This dissonance was only apparent, as the scale of this new form blended harmoniously with the earlier tradition.

The Second World War, as everywhere, brought a collapse in the bather movement. After the advent of Soviet rule in 1944, the situation changed completely. Visitors changed, customs changed, large-scale concrete hotels and blocks of flats were built. A significant part of the historic buildings disappeared or was transformed.
