Ostashin Manor

The text describes Ostaszyn, located in the Novgorod district. The note goes on to describe the exterior of the manor house and its origin: it was the property of the Ottenhaus family, while in the 19th century the manor house belonged to the Hromyko, Bułhak and then Grabowski families (Source: "Ziemia. Tygodnik Krajoznawczy Ilustrowany', Warsaw 1912, no. 3, pp. 4-5, after: Wielkopolska Biblioteka Cyfrowa).

A modernised reading of the text

Manor house in Ostashin (Novgorod district).

Ostaszyn, situated in the Novogrudok district, on the Serwecha river, a tributary of the Nemunas, 5 woysts from the town of Tsyryny and 10 woysts from Tuchawice, by its location and the character of its surroundings, comes close to the heart of the Novogrudok region, that exceptionally beautiful, picturesque cradle of Mickiewicz.

The walled manor house, with its two-storey double roof, typical and so rare nowadays, must remember the 18th century, when, by way of a division, the estate left the hands of the Ottenhaus family, and remained in this family in its considerable part, also called Ostaszyn, located only a few hundred steps from the first one. In the course of the 19th century the estate belonged successively to the Hronik and Bułhak families, and more recently it returned to the Grabowski family, the owners of the second Ostaszyn after the Ottenhaus family.

Thus, these two manors, separated in their time, have now been reunited. It is a curious and unexplained detail that they both have brick manors and farm buildings, but only Ostaszyn, whose likeness is given here, bears the nickname "brick". It has rich and very old woodland - impressive in particular are the centuries-old poplars of rare thickness and height. However, the storms of recent years have made significant cracks in these dense avenues.

The manor house in the second Ostashino was until recently in a state of disrepair, even though it has very interesting architecture - corner diagonal scarps, extremely fundamental, reminiscent of a fortress or tower way of building. This manor house must have been much older than the first one and could have been a valuable reminder of the past if it had been properly maintained in its time.
